The five performance management processes are planning, monitoring, developing, rating and rewarding, as the US Office of Personnel Management describes them. Planning sets goals and expectations; monitoring tracks progress through check-ins; developing closes skill gaps; rating is the formal review; rewarding links results to recognition, pay or promotion.
Most companies run the same five as stages of one yearly cycle, under names such as goal-setting, feedback, coaching, evaluation and recognition.
